John Herbert III, PE

John Herbert

John Herbert is a registered professional engineer in Florida who specializes in land development-type projects. With over 43 years of construction and engineering experience, Mr. Herbert knows the land development process in detail. The size of projects under his responsibility range from one-half-acre service station sites to a 210-acre residential subdivision. John Herbert has the education, experience, and drive to take your project concept to completion.

Mr. Herbert was born and raised in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where he received his formal education. In 1977, John began his studies at the University of Akron. In addition to extensive courses in math and science, his engineering curriculum included Design of Structures, Surveying, Hydrology, Construction Principles and Practices, Engineering Economics, and Geotechnical Engineering. In 1982, after he received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, John moved to Fort Myers, Florida. As a resident of Florida, Mr. Herbert has been to numerous continuing education seminars to keep current with the permitting procedures and state regulations that affect land development.

Mr. Herbert’s business experience began in Ohio, where he worked for a large highway and earth moving construction company. He started as a laborer, during which time he laid water lines, sewer pipes, storm drainage pipes and assisted the surveyor with construction layout. After a year in the field, John was promoted to the office, where he worked in the estimating department. To better understand land development and construction in the State of Florida, John’s first job upon graduation from college was that of labor in Fort Myers. During 1983 he gained valuable field experience in heavy equipment operation, pipe laying, asphalt and concrete paving, earthmoving, pile driving, and marine contraction. In 1984, with a solid construction background, John took a position with a small land development engineering and surveying firm in Fort Myers. He developed site plans and subdivision construction plans for commercial, industrial, and residential projects. While in Fort Myers, Mr. Herbert completed projects in Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, and Sarasota counties.

In early 1987 John moved to Longwood, Florida, and took a position with a large engineering firm located in downtown Orlando. For six months, he worked as a staff engineer and gained insight into the internal workings of a large design firm. Not satisfied with the position, John went to work with a mid-size engineering and surveying company in Orlando. He worked on numerous land development and municipality projects in Orange, Seminole, Lake, Flagler, Volusia, and Sumter counties. John was responsible for the total project from conception to construction. His background in actual field construction makes it possible for John to design highly effective projects which save the client cost due to lower construction bids. Another area of responsibility for John was the project management aspects of land development. Mr. Herbert determined project schedules with target dates for various local and state approvals. He also planned permitting strategies to shorten the time of review and agency action on development applications. As the project manager, John coordinated the effects of other professionals such as environmental, geotechnical, landscape, and transportation.

In 1990, after years of experiencing a wide variety of successful projects, Mr. Herbert created American Civil Engineering Company. As President, John has full responsibility for producing high-quality service at competitive rates. He is personally involved with all of the projects and can focus the production of American Civil Engineering Company as the need arises to meet deadlines.
